Romanian banks post record growth in problem loans



Delinquencies for loans higher than 20,000 lei have risen 9.9% in October from a month earlier, as loans 90 days past due have passed the 4 billion lei mark, data provided by the National Bank of Romania show.
Compared to end-2008, outstanding loans increased two times (105.4%), while problem loans 90 days past due jumped 267.8% from 1.113 billion lei on December 31, 2008 to 4.094 billion at the end of October this year.

Delinquencies for loans removed from the balance sheet increased by 6.4% in October, to 1.136 billion lei from 1.068 billion lei at the end of September. Compared to end-2008, arrears for loans off-balance recorded a modest decrease from 1.362 billion at the end of 2008.

Loans 15 days past due dropped slightly in October to 348 million lei from 452 million a month earlier. From end-2008, loans 15 days past due jumped 43.2%.

Loans 16-30 days past due increased to 362 million lei from 231 million lei in September and 165 million at the end of 2008. Loans 31-60 days past due went up to 480 million lei from 346 million lei a month earlier and 29 million lei on December 31, 2008.

According to data provided by NBR, non-performing loan ratio in total bank lending climbed to 2.98% at the end of October from 2.74% a month earlier. Versus end-2008, bad loan ratio doubled from 1.74%.

The number of borrowers who defaulted on their loans dropped modestly from a month earlier, by 0.8%, namely 1,820 persons, to 213,161. Compared to end-2008, number of bad debtors jumped 53.4% in the first ten months this year.
