Carrefour adds two more units to its chain in Romania

Carrefour Romania, part of the French retailer, will open today in Buzau the 21st hypermarket in Romania and the 15th unit outside Bucharest, according to the press release remitted by the company.

Carrefour Buzau will cover 4,000 sqm in terms of retail space and will be located in Aurora Shopping Mall. The new store will create 200 new jobs, and will commercialize 25,000 products. The officials of the company did not disclose the amount of the investment.

Carrefour entered the supermarket segment by acquiring the 21-store Artima chain in last year’s fall for 55 million euros. By the end of this year, 20 Artima stores will be rebranded as Carrefour Express.

French-based retailer Carrefour reported first-quarter sales of 508 million euros, in Romania, up 40.3% from a year ago. Carrefour Romania posted 866 million euros turnover last year, up 42.2% from 2006.
