Carrefour opens 17th supermarket in Carrefour Express chain



Carrefour Romania opened at Deva the 17th supermarket within Carrefour Express network, being part of the 21 Artima stores that the retailer acquired in 2007 which the French retailer will rebrand this year by EUR 6 million investments.

Carrefour Express Deva covers 997 sqm and will commercialize an 8,000 products range which will include basic food and non-food products, but also services such as Carrefour MasterCard credit card, the payzone electronic recharge for mobile phone or lottery products. Carrefour intends to enforce position of supermarket segment, but also to enlarge the geographical coverage of the group in Romania.

Carrefour Romania acquired last year’s fall the supermarket chain Artima, for EUR 55 million. Artima network includes 21 stores, located in western country covering 21,000 sqm.

Carrefour Romania holds 17 supermarkets nationwide, six of them being in Bucharest. French-based retailer Carrefour posted EUR 508 million overall sales volume in first half 2008, up by 40.3% compared to similar interval of last year.

According to last year earning report issued by the company, Carrefour’s turnover amounted to EUR 886 million, up 42.2% from 2006. In 2008, the retailer aims at exceeding EUR 1 billion in turnover.
